The term "anonymous surfing" means different things to different people. For some it is simply the ability to browse the Internet without displaying their IP address. And for such purposes, a simple web proxy may suffice. However, it is important that you be aware of the risks and limitations of web proxies. In particular:
- They may not be SSL compatible, so you cannot safely login to webmail, submit personal information, or enter a username/password anywhere.
- They are able to monitor the information being relayed. So while you may be hiding your IP address from a target website, you're also exposing your web use to the proxy operator.
- They are easily broken with popups and scripts. Because of this, you should consider web proxies a low level form of anonymous surfing at best.
